Ben – Hayles/Montfort – VIII

So… a work of interactive fiction is a program that simulates a world, understands natural-language (conspicuously missing from most of this) text input from an interactor and provides a textual reply based on events in the world.

I still have a few questions…

Can we move along now?

What about a film like Toy Story, or The Incredibles? Isn’t that also digital storytelling?

I needed more proof not to judge a book by its cover?

Perhaps Murray’s Venn diagram collapses apples into oranges in the interest of her abiding question, “who are we and what are we doing here,” but Hayles claim that “illegibility is not simply a lack of meaning, but a signifier of distributed cognitive processes… not merely an internal activity of the human mind,” confounds shinola with something scholastics no doubt refer to as “pitch blend.”
